Jayasuriya Retirement Call
I was listening to ABC Grandstand today, lamenting yet another poor performance from Sri Lanka’s batsmen. One of the commentators (quite possibly Peter Roebuck) said words to the effect of: “Jayasuriya needs to retire and the rest need to go back to school.” Once again, when a batsman gets a run of bad scores, the first thing the critics go for is the age. If you’re over 30, you’re over the hill. No thought of the obvious fact that some 35 year-old cricketers are fitter than the 25 year-olds in their own teams… In the case of batsmen, most could go on for years after they retire. It’s just that they have other things they’d rather do. If Jayasuriya wants to go to the next world cup (which I’ve heard he does), then he should have every chance that a guy 10 years younger does.
